It’s October 1, which doesn’t just mean that we’re gearing up for another round of rumors about an alleged iPad mini—it also means Apple’s attempt at creating its own social network has now been laid to rest. Ping, first introduced in September of 2010 as part of iTunes, has been officially shut down as of Monday, though parts of it will live on when Apple releases the next major version of iTunes later this month.

Massive LinkedIn Security Breach Leads To 6.5 Million Stolen Passwords

Professional social network giant LinkedIn has acknowledged that it is looking into a massive data breach. As a result of the breach as many as 6.5 million user accounts may have been compromised. Account data including login information and passwords have been leaked and posted to a Russian hacker site. Although LinkedIn hasn’t confirmed the breach or detailed which accounts might have been impacted, the fact that the company is acknowledging the potential threat and investigating it is a big cause for concern.

Besides the hype, besides the technical fuckups of NASDAQ, besides the overvaluation and offering too many shares during their IPO, I think the reason Facebook’s stock is failing as much as it is right now is that people have come to realize that Everybody’s Favorite Social Network is just too obnoxious, intrusive, and data-scrapingly assholish in the way it treats everyone from its most ardent users to, sadly, people on third-party platforms like, I dunno, TUMBLR, that perhaps want nothing at all to do with the privacy black hole that is Mark Zuckerberg’s dickishness incarnate but wake up and log on to find THIS UTTER BULLSHIT.
